October 19, 2001 Meeting Summary

Haseko Building in Downtown Honolulu, 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Attendance: Havinne Anderson, Andrew Aoki, Kai Brown, L.A. Burke, Mervina Cash-Kaeo, Susan Chandler, Jo Chang, Doris Ching, Frank Chong, Susan Doyle, Mary Alice Evans, Lynn Fallin, Aaron Fujioka, Beth Giesting, Kathi Hasegawa, Elizabeth Kent, Kathryn Koos-Lee, Irving Lauber, Alice Lee (by phone from Maui), Andy Levin (by phone from Hawaii), Lurline McGregor, Arnold Morgado (for Judy Perry), Jeanne Ohta, Ginny Pressler, Jerry Rauckhorst, John Sabas (for Vicky Borges), Oliver Schultz, Tin Myaing Thein, Mary Pat Waterhouse, Claire Woods, and Sylvia Yuen.

The members discussed the draft Committee Focus and suggested revisions. Elizabeth Kent will send a revised draft focus to members.

Susan Chandler provided an update on the upcoming special legislative session. Susan also said that Olelo and Public Television agreed to do public service announcements for a special food drive, for which Vicky Cayetano may be a spokesperson.

The Committee discussed the draft ground rules and made suggestions for changes. Elizabeth Kent will make the changes and L.A. Burke and Jo Chang will draft options for some new ground rules. The revised draft will be sent to committee members before the next meeting.

Susan Doyle announced that David Nakada will be the legislative coordinator for the Committee and that he has much experience with the legislature

The Committee briefly discussed how to measure its success in accomplishing its mission. Members should send ideas for success indicators to Oliver Schultz by email at oschultz@dhs.state.hi.us or by fax at 586-4890 by Thursday, October 25. Oliver will compile the responses, which will be discussed at the October 26 meeting.

The next meeting will be held at the Kaimuki offices of the Salvation Army at 845 22nd Avenue on Friday, October 26, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Oliver Schultz will email all members with a reminder.
